Weekly Report No. 3 🫡🎶
Some thoughts about Spotify Wrapped 2023 and a bunch of music discoveries from this week | MC #61
Hey,
How's your week going so far? I spent most of it worried about my Dad who got sick (I’m so happy that you’re getting better! 🫶), missing my Tom who flew to the UK 🇬🇧 (he’s returned yesterday, yay!), having some annual health check-ups, celebrating the Cyber Week sale at my code-inspired poster shop thecode.xyz, and enjoying the Spotify Wrapped 2023.
I know SW is a flawed thing but still gives some fun, right? It may not be the most accurate when it comes to counting which songs were your top ones. Why on earth there’s no
on my list?! I’ve been listening to his meditations a lot, especially when writing. I feel like this year’s results are more off than before, like it sums up the songs that you’ve quickly skipped, or had a massive obsession with them to completely lose interest in it after a week or two.The horse meme down below, which we created together with my friend Nava, illustrates our opinion that Spotify Wrapped 2023 is inaccurate. It focused too much on the first months of this year and left the rest half-baked.
Nonetheless, the Wrapped gives us another reason to interact, compare results, and just enjoy the music. Soooo let me know, what type are you? Alchemist, Vampire, or something else?
Today’s finds are mostly from YouTube suggestions, which never cease to pleasantly surprise me. Hope you enjoy these fresh additions to the Weekly Report Playlist, which you can follow / hit ♡ button (Save to Your Library) on Spotify:
Okay, enough of this blabbering.
Onwards!
▶️ Low Hum - "I Don’t Know Me Like You Do"
Welp, I feel like this one is about to be stuck on repeat for a long time. It has many things I adore - groovy drums, very soulful, hearth-touching lyrics, with some darkness inside. After already listening to this song 634736281 times, I’m sooo ready for diving into Low Hum’s discography.
▶️ Milky Chance - "Like A Clown"
I consider Milky Chance to be a band that never disappoints. Each release from this German duo is easy to listen to and makes you wanna dance with every cell of the body. Also, their music videos are usually really well-made. This one particularly caught my attention with the cheerful melody, funky vibe, and catchy lyrics.
▶️ Fox Academy - "Hornet"
I fell in love with this cacophonous and kind of unique sound from the very first listen. It gives me real fire in my belly 🔥. These guys from Portland did a great job. Check them out on Bandcamp. There’s a lot of cool stuff in there. Also, their website is quite dope in a messy, and interesting collage style ✂️.
▶️ mehro - "like you’re god"
I'm just so mesmerized by this song, its sensitivity and depth. Love this sexy vocal, in combination with a melody that has a forbidden feeling to it. I think this song would fit into some dark TV series like "You", "Mad Men", or "True Blood" 🧛🏻♂️.
▶️ Slothrust - "Pony"
This Boston trio managed to make what was already a spicy song even spicier 🌶️🥵🔥. I don’t know how about you, but I wasn’t a fan of Ginuwine’s original version. I think the not-so-good association with cheesy, tacky Magic Mike movies completely disappears here.
P.S. Here’s a bonus Cover Love playlist, that’s a mix of my all-time favorite covers. Have fun exploring! 🚀
Okay, so now’s the voting time ⬇️⬇️⬇️
Thanks for reading and listening to today’s Weekly Report. Feel free to let me know what you think and how you’re doing.
Sending you lots of good vibes from chilly Poland 🥶❄️🇵🇱.
Have a lovely weekend,
It was very tough picking between #1 and #5 but I ended up going with the crunchiness of Slothrust. Great song!
My SW said I was a Hypnotist - “Your concentration is absolute friend. You like to play albums all the way through, from the opening track to the final note.” That’s absolutely true. I’m unabashedly an album guy, probably always will be.
My top artists in 2023 were:
(1) Arlo Parks (mistake - I left her album playing on repeat overnight by mistake)
(2) Meg Baird (one of my top 30 albums of the year)
(3) Will Johnson (in my top 10 this year)
(4) The Cure (prepping for their concert in June)
(5) Gaz Coombes (another top album this year)
All in all, kinda accurate, but also not really. Interesting though.
Are you going to do your wins for 2023? I found your 2022 list very inspirational!
